SEO For You is about whether to hire a SEO firm or freelancer for you project.

First of all, before considering which firm/freelancer you wish to hire, become familiar with the difference between those two. Often times, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) firms charge monthly rates and include very time-intensive services. Freelancers, on the other hand, perform SEO services as efficiently as possible. This is true of freelancers that get paid by the job, not by the hour or month. These freelancers, like myself via HikeMySite.com, want to offer the perfect services for the specific client. Customizing a package to fit the needs of a client’s website is economical. Paying a large SEO firm $500 per month to write articles and create backlinks is awefully vague. Your business may be able to afford these bigger SEO firms, but hiring the right freelancer will help you control your project. Freelancers are more personal and will be able to explain the specific services they are performing and why they are essential to the project.

For example, if Company A hires a SEO firm to optimize their website, they may pay for services that the web developer already covered twice. Having a general rate and non-specific service package may be favorable for a large corporation because it is easier on the books and on management. Freelancers, good freelancers I should say, will look at the existing website and backlinks to analyze your current optimization and the goal for your website. The SEO For You depends on your preferences.

At this point it may sound like hiring a large SEO firm is not smart. I don’t mean that there isn’t a place for SEO firms; however, if you are reading this article, you are probably better off hiring a freelancer. If you are researching and trying to get active in optimizing your site, hiring a freelancer will help you do just that. It is very easy to call up your SEO freelancer to ask how the project is going and to see what you can do to help the project along. At HikeMySite.com, I make myself personally available for clients for these reasons. In some cases the business owner wants to help by providing content or an overall vision of the site layout.

Bottom Line: I recommend hiring a SEO freelancer, after extensive research and personal communication, rather than a SEO firm if you are looking to have an engaging project and perhaps learn how to keep your high rankings yourself. Freelancers will be able to summarize a few points that you should get good at rather than saying “for $100 a month we can provide montly articles to keep your high ranking.” If you own a large business or simply would rather send a flat rate to a firm for optimization, then I recommend you do just that.

Make sure to do research and try to call/video conference with the individual(s) that will be heading up the SEO campaign

Browser Tracking | Gary Kovacs

Browser Tracking  | Gary Kovacs

This TED Talk is about being aware of who is tracking you on the internet. Gary Kovacs offers a Firefox add-on to help track who is tracking you, Browser Tracking. Tracking is done for numerous reasons that are both helpful to the searcher and potentially suspicious. Some are paranoid enough to browse using proxies to mask their identities, but I agree that browser tracking is enough to be updated with your information leaching across the internet.

If you have social media pages, a blog, website, or staff/faculty page online, your personal information is being spread across the infinite internet. I don’t see this as a bad thing. Then again, the more my pages are spread, the more exposure for Hike My Site! Transferring your personal information is done by most websites that you log in to or that are developed enough to recognize you–Google. Google knows your location even if you don’t sign in before searching. Other websites, such as Weather forecasting sites, are also aware of your location often times. By having you location saved or recognized by websites, you have a more relevant internet experience. Browser tracking, says Gary Kovacs, is a way to continually improve our online experience. It is a smart idea to keep an eye on where your information is going and what information is out there about you.

Energy Theory | Amory Lovins

Energy Theory  | Amory Lovins

Amory Lovins is an expert in energy theory and leads the way in lessening our reliance on oil. He talks about the rising risks of using fossil fuels. “We need a new fire.” He says that we could eliminate our need of some fossil fuels by 2050. A cheaper energy system could support much larger societies. Whether you care most about the environmental aspect, business opportunity, or growing scarcity of resources, Amory Lovins argues for an achievable, better future of energy theory.

He explains the use of fossil fuels in autos. 2/3 of the fuel that cars require is due to the weight of the vehicle. Amory Lovins argues that lowering the price of the car and fuel will revolutionize our mobility. People will be able to afford efficient transportation and begin to relieve society’s dependence on fossil fuels. Battery technology is obviously in need of improvement; however, new battery technologies could render gasoline-powered vehicles useless in the near future.

Vehicle fitness will revolutionize the auto industry. America could lead this new auto revolution, but the public will have to get behind it first. 4/5 of the funding for vehicles can be saved. Cheaper vehicles will again expand the economy and help more people travel freely. All of this can/will be done, while making the world a better place.

Text Therapy  | Nancy Lublin

Nancy Lublin is a social advocacy expert. She discovered the effectiveness of text therapy when she began texting teenagers to help out with her social advocacy organization. Teens began texting their problems and stresses to her. You may not realize how easy it is to text  about problems and other topics that are not as comfortable in the open. Nancy Lublin discovered a “hidden” sociological impact of texting. Text therapy is possible because of the same reason that some teens share hurtful messages via text that they would never say. It offers a detached way to express yourself while getting it off the top of your mind.

Obviously cyber-bullying, described briefly above, is a large problem. However, this TED Talk presents a huge positive implication of communicating via text. Does it make sense to you that teens are more willing to text about their problems than talk outright? I think this leads us to think about further implications of texting. I’m confident that more ways to utilize texting for social advocacy will arise and begin to change the way we think about technology. Texting isn’t always bad; it depends on the user. It’s the same concept as “people kill people, not guns.”

Anyway, I hope you enjoy Nancy Lublin and her social advocacy talk on text therapy! Enjoy.
